"The Blind Side"
Yes, it might seem a bit odd to include an Oscar-winning turn on a list of performances that mostly haven't received due credit – but to listen to the collective wailing around the blogosphere when Bullock emerged as the Best Actress frontrunner for this hokey inspirational drama, you'd have thought the Academy was handing an Oscar to Carmen Electra. Arguably no other acting win this century has been greeted with quite such critical hostility. And yet, when you peel away the phony, dial-a-slogan sentiment of the film surrounding her, Bullock's performance is something rather special: harder and more pragmatic than you expect it to be at almost every turn, without ceding her natural star persona to the biographical outline of gold-hearted soccer mom Leigh-Anne Twohy. Imagine a workaday actress like, say, Kyra Sedgwick in the role: she might match Bullock for technical proficiency, but not galvanizing charisma. The film wasn't a smash hit by accident.
