Chloe Sevigny - "Boys Don't Cry" (1999)
Then: Based on the true story of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was brutally murdered once his new friends discover he was born a woman, Sevigny earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Lana, the young woman who falls in love with Brandon. While Sevigny didn't take home the gold, many critics felt Sevigny's grounded, emotional performance was more than equal to that of co-star Hilary Swank (who did win an Oscar). While the actress had become a '90s "It" girl and was at one point best known for her fashion sense, with "Boys Don't Cry" she showed audiences she had much more to offer.
