What films didn't hit the mark this year?
5. "I'm Still Here"
Why it's so bad: You have to have some sympathy for Joaquin Phoenix. The man gave up almost a year of his life to shoot a mock-documentary so misconceived and so flawed it came pretty close to career suicide. Unfortunately, the idea of Phoenix pretending he'd gone off the deep end, "quit" acting and decided to become a hip-hop artist worked on paper, but failed on the screen. Why? Mostly because Phoenix couldn't pull it off -- especially the rapping -- at all. It was a horrible miscalculation that makes most of "Here" one of the most painful docs or pseudo docs to watch in years. Worse, when everyone tried to call Phoenix and director Casey Affleck on their ruse they insisted it was "true" until opening weekend when the reviews were venomous. It only made them look worse and audiences, critics and the industry angrier.
One nice thing we can say about it: At least we know when Hollywood stars let themselves go to hell they can look worse than you and me without much effort.
