The nepotism gripe (April 2012- )
"Girls," a show that's routinely accused of representing only a privileged white view of New York City, earned some dubious attention when one meme-maker noticed that all four main cast members of the show come from particularly rich families. Dunham is the daughter of painter Carroll Dunham and artist Laurie Simmons; Jemima Kirke is the daughter of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke; Allison Williams is the daughter of NBC news anchor Brian Williams; Zosia Mamet is the daughter of towering playwright David Mamet. Is this scandalous? Maybe not, but it dovetails conveniently with some detractors' major criticisms of the show.
