The Road to Oscar: What do the PGA nods mean for the Best Picture Contenders?

'Avatar' is in, but is 'Nine' really out? And could 'Star Trek' make it to the Kodak?

    Some you've forgotten about:
    Crazy Heart
    A Prophet
The White Ribbon (will also get a Best Foreign nom, but will ultimately lose out to "A Prophet", which is ineligible for Best Pic)
    A Single Man
    This Is It
    The Road
    The Messenger
    The Last Station
    The Lovely Bones

Out of all of those, the only deserving ones in my opinion are: An Education, Up, District 9, and Avatar.

Although I will admit that I haven't seen Precious or A Serious Man yet

Avatar winning anything besides technicaly awards is nonsense. I know I am wrong and it is going to happen, it will probably win it all, but thats unfortunate. It's not a great story. That is what should count, not how much money it made or tech is pushed. It was an amazing experience, I loved it to death, but its not Oscar material. The Hurt Locker was the best film of the year. It should win.

'Avatar' has technical chops and little else. You don't have to see the film to know what happens; it's Alien National Geographic with some stock characters and a rehashed plot. I haven't seen many of these other films, but 'The Hurt Locker' is my pick, with 'District 9' in a close second. Those two films are simply taut, visceral, emotional, and more importantly, ambitious on more than just a technical front. Both managed to give us stunningly original tales, stellar lead performances, and poignant conclusions. 'Avatar' can claim none of those.

Msrge District 9 is about asymmetric situations now happening in science, world currencies, world markt, military. Rain forest slashing issue Avatar carries IS a grave issue, but does Oscar lending limelinght to it help?? "The Emerald Forest" made it to the BAFTA, but did deforestation stop or even slow down?

District 9 budget is even more sparkling. At 1/10 Avatar's budget, it managed to drive the issues home: the humble Prawns had an ancient culture and universe of their own, and it is so abundant they can live in squalor and garbage land all their lives and still thrive.
