Academy voters rightly dished out a Best Makeup Oscar for the astonishing trans-species metamorphoses in Cronenberg's rich, subtext-laden B-movie remake, but if they had an ounce of either sense or humor, they'd have noticed the equally astonishing performance enduring them. A never-to-be-bettered role for the character actor, it fed off Goldblum's bravura gonzo energy and cemented it for the mainstream.
