5. Judy Davis in "Naked Lunch" (1991)
In 1991, “Barton Fink” and “Naked Lunch” made an oddly continuous double-bill for Australian leftfield queen Davis: she winds up murdered in both surreal, writerly period pieces. But only in Cronenberg's adaptation of the Burroughs novel does she get to drink insecticide and play her own doppelganger – both her Joans equally vinegary and riveting. Of course, it's not the only multi-character performance in this list.
