8. Samantha Eggar in "The Brood" (1979)
British actress Samantha Eggar was an ingenue Best Actress nominee at the 1965 Oscars, only for her career to swiftly stall; it's perhaps luckier for us than for her that it did, since by 1979, she was willing to take a daft-sounding role as a wholly unhinged mother of murderous progeny in Cronenberg's brilliantly demented horror effort – and attack it with ravenous conviction.
