1. Jeremy Irons in "Dead Ringers" (1988)
“Some of you may understand why,” Irons intoned after thanking David Cronenberg in his Oscar acceptance speech for “Reversal of Fortune.” The gesture prompted a surge of applause from audience members who knew he'd been robbed blind by the Academy two years previously, when voters failed to notice his unnervingly seductive, technically rigorous turn as twin gynaecologists in what, for my money, is still Cronenberg's finest hour. Irons's, too, and he seemed to know it.
