10. Viggo Mortensen in "Eastern Promises" (2007)
Lately Cronenberg's most loyal onscreen collaborator (though he skipped “Cosmopolis”), Mortensen remains the only one of his actors ever to secure a leading Oscar nod. When you consider the deliciously surly, nasty toughness of his tattooed Russian mobster Nikolai, one wonders how he cracked it. Perhaps he earned “bravery” points for the nude fight scene. Either way, we're glad it happened, right?
