3. Alice Harford in "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)
When Stanley Kubrick cast Cruise 'n' Kidman, then Hollywood's hottest tabloid-magnet couple, in the undressed marital drama that would be his final film, many were quick to label the move a stunt. Which is precisely what it was, but that didn't mean they weren't perfect for a sex-life dissection that revealed harmoniously balanced new facets in both stars' personae: if Cruise had never been this insecurely reticent, Kidman had never been quite this aggressively unruly. She delivers her belittling fantasy monologues in a manner that at once rambles and cuts deep, cruelly composing herself just as her husband goes to pieces. This isn't said often enough, but it's one of the most startling performances in any Kubrick film.
Awards: Best Actress (Drama) nominee, Satellite Awards.
