9. "Vertigo" (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958)
Choosing between “Psycho” and Sight & Sound’s eventual champion was among the toughest and most frequently flip-flopped decisions I made in compiling this list. The former I’ve loved for longer, but “Vertigo” is the one I love deeper, perhaps because its own obsessive, unhinged romanticism demands a little more care. S&S editor may have had a point when he described “Vertigo” as the ultimate critics' movie, not least because its splintered memories so actively beg for rearrangement and interpretation, reflecting the viewer with no possibility of reproach. Plus, no film has ever colonized a color quite as sensually and comprehensively as this one repossessed green: why Vertigo Jade isn't a shade you can order in your local paint store, I do not know.
