5. Sorry, they don't feel that bad about not giving David Fincher an Oscar last year.
As "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" cut a surprisingly swift path through the guild nominations, ticking every box despite good-not-ecstatic reviews and solid-not-sensational box office, pundits and fans alike were swift to assign a narrative to its success: this is Hollywood's mea culpa gesture to David Fincher! So guilty do they feel about the "Social Network" helmer suffering the indignity of losing to Tom Hooper last year, that they're falling over themselves to honor his latest, lesser film! Well, no dice, says the Academy. The pulpy thriller scored a respectable five nods, but couldn't convert its mentions from the producers, writers or directors guilds, showing that, while Academy members like Fincher's work well enough, they don't feel they owe him anything. --Guy Lodge
