6. They're still not that persuaded by box office.
The move to an expanded Best Picture field was a thinly veiled attempt at opening the gates for populist entertainment. So far, the experiment has proven iffy on that score. And today, "The Artist" and "Hugo," as expected, led the field of nominees, neither of them box office stories, while "Bridesmaids" -- which did incredibly well along the guild circuit and had many wondering about its Best Picture potential, didn't get chalked up there after all. Point being: the Academy just isn't that persuaded by a hit, not always, anyway. --Kristopher Tapley
