The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Scary PG-Rated Films

With Halloween around the corner, we revisit some less explicit horrors

<p>Another Halloween, another horror movie list. Or not. Where most such lists are dominated by grisly R-rated fare many fully-grown men can scarcely endure, we think it's worth remembering that it's not only adults who like being spooked in the cinema. Today's list rounds up ten films -- not all of them thrillers, not all of kid-tailored -- that children are nonetheless free to watch. What I love about "Poltergeist" is the fact that it's scary as hell and yet has a body count of exactly Zero. Nobody even gets hurt (and the one gross-out moment turns out not to be real).

Of course, most of the films on your list were released before there was a PG-13 rating; I'd be interested in a newer list of scary films that actually DO have current PG ratings.

The Peanut Butter Solution is the film that scarred my childhood more than any other.

Hard for me to think of movie I saw that scared me more as a child than THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS (1980), a Disney effort I saw when I was eight years old. The creepy mirrors with the blind-folded little girl, Bette Davis and her creepiness, and just the whole vibe of the thing. I saw this, in the theater, when I was eight. EIGHT. Horrifying.

Weird, I saw Poltergeist recently and it didnt scare me, yet every time I've seen Labyrinth I get so fucking scared and I have been like this since I was a kid.

Maaaaaaaan, I forgot all about The Witches and, more to the point, Angelica Houston in that make-up. Ha, I remember being about 5 and going to see Furngulley with my Dad and seeing just a preview for it and being so scared by the make-up I started screaming over and over again until we had to leave theater.
