The grizzled seaman of the piece, some may take issue with Elba’s inclusion given the many that were left off of this list in his favor. He gave as much depth and dimension to his portrayal of the seasoned and roughly good-natured captain of the Prometheus as was possible, however. More than that, he had a series of challenging circumstances to contend with in the film that easily could have gone into the realm of the glib one-liner end of the spectrum or reality shattering melodrama on the other in less deft hands. Elba brings a pragmatic sense of the human experience that serves to both elevate and ground “Prometheus.”
