From "The Paperboy" to "Amour," 10 films we can't wait to see on the Croisette this year
8. "Mud" (Jeff Nichols)
If it is something of a surprise to see American director Nichols elevated to Competition status for his third film -- just one year after winning the festival's Critics' Week sidebar -- that's a testament to the impact made by his previous film, last year's teasing psychodrama "Take Shelter." His latest continues his mutually beneficial partnership with actor Michael Shannon, but adds some bigger stars to the mix, including Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, whose fans have waited long enough for a vehicle worthy of her gifts. "Mud," a coming-of-age story about two teenage boys harboring a fugitive, allegedly bears comparison to "Stand By Me," and promises a slightly warmer, more classical vein of Americana for the director.
