The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2012
A new year, a new reserve of hope for the multiplex
8. "Love" (Michael Haneke, No Current US Distribution - TBA)
When Michael Haneke and Isabelle Huppert hook up, strange and strangely beautiful things happen. On paper, their third collaboration, "Love," doesn't sound quite as nervy. All we know so far is that Huppert plays the daughter of two elderly music teachers (Emmanuelle Riva and, in his first film appearance in nine years, Jean-Louis Trintignant), one of whom suffers a debilitating stroke. It's hard to imagine Haneke treading mawkish disease-of-the-week territory, of course, so we'll learn what he has up his sleeve when the film the film premieres, presumably in Cannes -- where Huppert herself handed his last effort, "The White Ribbon," the Palme d'Or three years ago. Expectations will be high. --Guy Lodge
