The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2012

A new year, a new reserve of hope for the multiplex

9. "The Great Gatsby" (Baz Luhrmann, Warner Bros. Pictures - December 25)

I won’t deny being nervous about this. I actually kind of hate most of Lurhmann’s films, particularly “Romeo + Juliet.”  But anticipation isn’t the same as “expectation of quality.” When Lurhmann is on, he is on, with “Moulin Rouge!” being one of my favorites. Moreover, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic truly deserves a great screen adaptation. It has never been a particularly amenable big screen translation, perhaps due to its narrative style. But Lurhmann’s narrative and visual touch is so unique that maybe he’ll come up with something that will work? I certainly hope so. I also can’t wait to see Carey Mulligan’s career continue to develop. In any event, this will surely be a visual feast. --Gerard Kennedy
