7. "Adaptation." (2002)
2002 seems to me the point at which critics and audiences effectively renewed their vows to Meryl Streep: after spending a few years toiling in films decidedly unworthy of her presence, she returned with quick one-two of major performances in equally major prestige projects. One of them, Spike Jonze’s loopy study of writers behaving badly, was the kind of inspired auteur project one wishes she’d do more often. Playing the real-life journalist and author Susan Orlean, Streep looked more limber and liberated than she’d been in years: a scene where, stoned on orchid dust, she perfects her dial tone impression is a singular moment of genius.
