3. "The American" (2010)
Perhaps Clooney's most underrated work to date, his finely tuned performance as a firearms expert in "The American" will likely go on under the radar for the rest of his career. But in this exercise in observation, he finds a lot of surprising nuance. But he also drills down to his character as a machine, meticulously crafting a rapid-fire silenced weapon and clicking through the stages of his procedure with the cool and reserve of McQueen. And that's before we get into the resonating marinade of the film's longing love story.
