Clooney won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar and plenty of raves for his performance as a conscience-stricken CIA operative in Stephen Gaghan's ambitious if flawed stab at boiling Middle Eastern geopolitics down to a thrilling essence. The performance might be considered his best by many, and it's a fair consideration. He went way against type, packing on the pounds, growing out the facial hair and offering an equally unexpected internal portrayal.
