The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Gary Oldman Performances
With 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' heading to theaters, we look at the actor's best work
1. "Sid and Nancy" (1986)
There is something about Alex Cox's 1986 biopic chronicling the electric relationship between Sex Pistols punk rocker Sid Vicious and groupie-turned-girlfriend Nancy Spungen. It's a quality similar to one Oldman himself exhibits, a fine line between rampant madness and crystalline focus. Mike Leigh can lay claim to discovery but "Sid and Nancy" was the announcement. Oldman set a high bar for himself right out of the gate and though the list could be reordered countless times and still produce a worthy #1, this one came out on top this time around.
