10. "Father of My Children" (Mia Hansen-Løve, 2009)
Half a quietly shattering family drama of loss and new beginnings, and half one of the most painfully accurate portrayals of the vagaries of independent film production yet put to screen, Hansen-Løve’s film takes inspiration from the life and death of esteemed French arthouse producer (and the director’s own mentor) Humbert Balsan, played in fictionalized form by Louis-Do de Lencquesaing (pictured). It’s both a subtle tribute and a plea for the survival of an entire arm of French cinema.
