6. "Chicago" (2002)
Atwood won the first of her three Oscars for her flapper-era flurry of sequins and garters in Rob Marshall’s hit adaptation of the racy Broadway musical comedy – a film which perhaps shows us more skin than any other Best Costume Design winner. Given the monochrome iconography of the show, she arguably had more of a template to work with than usual, but the film’s clever fantasy-reality shifts afford the designer a lot of sly contrasts and witty character accents. Bonus points for the breathtaking old-Hollywood glamor of Catherine Zeta-Jones’s courtroom outfit.
