7. "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991)
People tend to associate Atwood with the lavish excesses of her period and fantasy pieces, but her famed Gothic sensibility can also be filtered into sober contemporary work, as in her thoughtfully drab costuming of Jonathan Demme’s landmark thriller. Atwood had already clothed the first Hannibal Lecter film, “Manhunter,” and fashioned an even more institutionally-minimalist look for the doctor this time, but it’s the details of Clarice Starling’s clothing – the truths hidden in her unwomanly, calculatedly ill-fitting business suits – that impress most here.
