8. "Edward Scissorhands" (1990)
Atwood’s first collaboration with Tim Burton – who would become her most loyal and least restrictive employer – remains one of her best. It is also, at least by the ever-inflating standards of Burton fantasias, one of her subtlest: Atwood has fun exaggerating the polyester textures of suburban 1960s fashions, but takes a more strikingly anachronistic approach to the title character, the glam-rock and S&M implications of his eerily shredded black leather bodysuit both underlining his alien status, and suggesting cultural growth to come.
