Modern trash isn’t a mode Atwood often gets to work in these days, which makes her giddily gaudy, now quintessentially 1980s costuming of Jonathan Demme’s frenetic Mafia black comedy all the more delicious. From the eye-straining, pattern-warring ensembles and outsize jewellery of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mercedes Ruehl’s taste-challenged mob wives to the excessively tailored suits and putrid leisurewear of the mobsters themselves, Atwood’s defined that expensively cheap brand of Mafia anti-chic over a decade before “The Sopranos” got to it.
