5. Kevin Kline, "Sophie's Choice" (1982)
Kevin Kline came out with a bang in Alan J. Pakula's 1982 drama better known for one of Meryl Streep's best performances and the one for which she won her solitary lead actress Oscar. Five years later he would have an Oscar of his own, but the charisma and dedication that brought him those spoils can be traced all the way back to his electrifying, frankly underrated work here. He goes toe-to-toe with Streep in "Sophie's Choice," gnawing the scenery when appropriate but always maintaining a scary, organic focus that keeps the character equally grounded and mysterious.
