The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 Debut Performances of All Time

Hunter McCracken and Elizabeth Olsen inspire a look at best-ever first-timers

6. Brad Dourif, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975)

A fellow stammerer to Norton's jailbird, and also in a cage of his own, was Brad Dourif in Milos Forman's 1975 masterpiece "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Dourif went on to have a thriving career as a character actor, and all of the technique and skill that paved the way for that longevity can be traced back to his work here. As Billy Bibbit, a troubled youth awakening to the fruits of love and the torment of adolescence, Dourif conveys so much with his eyes, his clenched anxiety and his touching gentleness.
