9. Edward Norton, "Primal Fear" (1996)
Edward Norton is such a presence in modern cinema that it's kind of surprising he never popped up on screen prior to 1996's court room drama "Primal Fear." Opposite Richard Gere, Norton stole the show with his portrayal of a meek, stuttering altar boy accused of murder -- who isn't quite what he appears to be. On the off-chance that 15 years later the result of the film's narrative is unknown to this or that reader, I'll stay away from spoilers, but Norton ultimately nailed down an Oscar nod for his expert portrayal of a complex individual.
