10. Tatum O'Neal, "Paper Moon" (1973)
A list such as this is bound to include its share of child actors, though I tried to hold back where I could. It can be hard to pit youthful instinct against weathered craft, but in the case of Tatum O'Neal -- the first of two Oscar-winning performances on the list -- it's a bit difficult to ignore. The 10-year-old O'Neal starred opposite her father Ryan in Peter Bogdanovich's Depression Era romp "Paper Moon" and became the youngest actor (to this day) to win a competitive Oscar. She delivers her character with scrappy determination and melts the heart all the same.
