The Lists: In Contention's Top 10 bubble contenders to consider for Oscar

Our picks for potential nominees that need that extra shove

6. Eiko Ishioka and Simonetta Mariano, "Immortals" (Best Costume Design)

The costume design category had one of its proudest moments 19 years ago, when veteran Japanese designer Eiko Ishioka took the prize for her extravagantly stylized threads in "Bram Stoker's Dracula." Since then, she's happily fallen under the spell of Tarsem, and their twinned insanity reaps truly delicious rewards in his delirious mythological fantasy "Immortals." Half sword-and-sandal epic, half Lady Gaga revue, Ishioka has decked out these Greek gods in a mixture of lavish battle armor, fetish masks and haute couture headgear, seemingly pinched from any number of artistic sources, yet curiously of a piece with the film's singular story world. The costumers routinely stick up for inspired design work in critically mauled films. Here's hoping they're in a playful mood. --Guy Lodge
