No. 8 - 'Ringer'
Sarah Michelle Gellar is worthy of our love for all of those years of distinguished service on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." You really can't praise her work on that landmark series highly enough. What she doesn't deserve, however, is an eternal free pass from criticism. And on "Ringer," Gellar is giving not one, but two one-dimensionally dreary performances, sucking energy from every scene of a show that doesn't have much energy to begin with. I don't love (or even like) ABC's "Revenge," but at least "Revenge" has settled into its role as a tawdry guilty pleasure. "Ringer" has, instead, become a gloomy drama about drug addiction in which people occasionally disappear (and then reappear) for reasons that aren't the least bit engaging. Through half a season, "Ringer" hasn't found any forward momentum and I don't even think there's a central mystery that I'm eager to see solved, much less a character whose life or death I'm invested in. It's just a bunch of stupid people plotting stupid plans in expensive formal attire. Gellar is bad, but nobody around her is particularly good, meaning that I wouldn't even know how I'd begin to tinker with "Ringer" to make it better. There's no good reason why I don't cast this one aside.
