No. 10 - 'How I Met Your Mother'
Because I'm sickly deluded, I don't think "How I Met Your Mother" is permanently broken, but very little in the past three seasons has offered much cause for hope, unless you happen to be a fiercely devoted Barney/Robin fan convinced that the writers won't screw things up a second time. It's not just that Ted has continued to spiral down the tube of douche-baggery, but more that in transforming Ted from a goofy eternal optimist into a unbearable fatalist, "HIMYM" has taken on a new level of misogyny or at least gynophobia. Ted used to idealize every available woman, but now if Ted doesn't skewer every new woman in his life, the show does it for him. It's no longer a question of *when* Ted is going to find The Mother of His Future Children, but rather *how* this newly warped version of Ted is ever going to be able to be likable in love ever again or how this newly warped version of "HIMYM" is going to give us an actress we want to see make Ted a groom. Seriously, "HIMYM" fans, is anybody out there rooting for the introduction of The Mother because they're rooting for Ted's happiness? Or are we just rooting for the mechanics of the show's increasingly warped mythology to resolve themselves? Once upon a time, "HIMYM" used to bend and twist the sitcom form and make it look easy. Now, even getting basic laughs requires convolutions, while the gimmicky structure-tweaking episodes are only rarely worth the effort.
