Jim Rockford, “The Rockford Files”
Rockford — an ex-con living in a trailer on the beach, driving around in a gold Firebird, and getting routinely punched in the gut sometime before the third commercial break — has a pretty airtight argument for TV’s best shamus ever: played by one of the medium’s most charming stars, blessed with perhaps the medium’s greatest theme song, with adventures written by Roy Huggins, Stephen J. Cannell, and a young guy named David Chase, a relaxed attitude and wry sense of humor evoking the best hard-boiled detective fiction. The gold standard against which all other shows in the genre must be measured.
