"The Monkees" (1966-68)
The Ridiculous Concept: A bunch of guys in a rock band have wacky misadventures. Seriously, there wasn't more of a theme than this.
Why It Was Great: I'm sure at the time it seemed like a small-screen version of "A Hard Day's Night." If you watched it as a kid, it was likely great fun. But if you don't love "The Three Stooges," this show was pretty much garbage with incredible, memorable songs. Ironically, the actual Monkees (Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith), who sang and performed their own instruments, made a much better band than the show deserved.
What It Taught Us About the Music Biz: If you write a great, iconic song, it might be used in a really crappy TV show.
Fun Fact: After the first season, Davy Jones received a draft notice -- and starved himself for three weeks in order to fail the physical. This would be just one of many, many reasons why the second season did not take place in Vietnam.
