HitFix ranks the franchise in time for 'Star Trek Into Darkness'
2. "Star Trek" (2009)
When J.J. Abrams set out to reboot the franchise with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the multiplexes had not seen a Starfleet adventure in seven years (a gap longer than any previous since 1979). To say the least, the material was ripe for re-imagining, and the team cooked up a fantastic design of inclusion rather than exclusion where the canon is concerned. Taking on the idea of separate timelines allowed the Trekkies to maintain what they held dear while maybe enjoying a new spin on old favorites. They injected the property with big budget spectacle -- every dollar represented on screen -- and brought in a new cast that clicked organically. It was a great start toward a new frontier.
