What's next: The rest of the first season of "A Gifted Man"
Lowdown: You may have recognized her face from 20+ years of playing small character parts in movies and TV - usually weary but wise salt of the earth types - but you probably didn't remember her name until "Justified" producer Graham Yost improbably, brilliantly cast her as the big villain for season 2. As hillbilly crime lord Mags Bennett, Martindale could be all folksy charm one minute, then cold menace the next, and mesmerizing throughout. A show about a 21st century gunslinger would seem to require a man or woman of action as the nemesis, but Martindale brought plenty of danger just from how persuasively she could speak - and how quick she was to offer any troublemaker a poisoned glass of her "apple pie" moonshine. The role earned her a career-validating Emmy, and a higher-paying - albeit much less fulfilling creatively - role on CBS' "A Gifted Man."
