'The Dark Knight Rises,' 'Hunger Games,' 'Star Wars' and other titles create some conundrums
13. Is 'Hunger Games' the next blockbuster franchise?
The buzz behind "The Hunger Games" started before the film ever went into production. Especially after it was labeled the next "Twilight" after Lionsgate acquired the property. The question has been whether the futuristic saga would appeal to young women as much as Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster novels have. If you were to judge by Facebook, you might be a tad concerned. The official Twilight Saga page has over 23 million followers. The official "Hunger Games" movie page is just under 980,000 followers. "Hunger Games," however, may have broader appeal because of the Sci-Fi and action elements to traditional moviegoers who haven't read the book. But has the media put unrealistic expectations on the movie? Would a $30 million opening be underwhelming? Possibly, but there may be some new fuel to help open the picture. Lionsgate bought Summit this week and is expected to use that company's brain trust to tap into the "Twilight" fan base. Needless to say, all of Hollywood will be looking at those opening day grosses.
