The 15 Questions Keeping Hollywood Awake in 2012
'The Dark Knight Rises,' 'Hunger Games,' 'Star Wars' and other titles create some conundrums
11. Which 3D re-release is the bigger hit: 'Star Wars: Episode 1' or 'Titanic'?
In one corner you have "Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace." When first released in 1999, George Lucas' bastardization, er, prequel to his classic Sci-Fi saga grossed a massive $431 million domestic and $924.3 million worldwide. In the other corner, you have James Cameron's Oscar-winning "Titanic." A film that held the title as the highest grossing picture of all-time ($600.7 million domestic, $1.8 billion worldwide) until Cameron's "Avatar" surpassed it in 2010. Now, both films are heading to theaters again since the first time they were released, but this time remastered in 3D with conveniently higher ticket prices. It's a battle that pits a Sci-Fi franchise generations have grown up with opposite a romance that had little old ladies around the world going to the theater to watch for weeks on end. Which film will gross the most? That's still unclear, but the biggest winner will be theater owners, that's for sure.
