9. Sergio Mora, "The Contender" Season 1
While "The Contender" was never a huge hit and it arrived as boxing was moving toward MMA-enforced marginalization, but it served its primary purpose in terms of elevating the profile of dozens of young and journeyman boxers and made them viable names for ESPN and solid undercard bouts. Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora deservedly won the first season with victories over future semi-names including Ishe Smith and Peter Manfredo Jr. but his great achievement came three years later when he beat Vernon Forrest to claim the WBC Light Middleweight title. Yes, Forrest turned around and beat Mora a year later to reclaim his crown, but even that fight was respectable, as was his split-decision loss to Sugar Shane Mosley. Mora lost a shot at a middleweight belt to Bryan Vera, another "Contender" veteran, in 2012. Still, that title and that win over a fighter of Forrest's status says a lot about what "The Contender" and Mora were able to accomplish. --Daniel Fienberg
