Watch them now at your own peril
"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (1970)
What We Loved About It As Kids: "Santa! Santa! Santa!"
Why It's Totally Messed Up: Granted, ABC has cut the special's truly horrendous musical number from rebroadcasts in recent years because OH MY GOD did no one think this was entirely yuck in the 20th century? Anyway, Kris Kringle sings this charming, predatory little ditty about how kids need to kiss him if they want toys. Wait, that almost sounds like it could be sweet and harmless and it sooooo isn't. Just read some of the lyrics. Just. Read.
If you sit on my lap today
A kiss a toy is the price you’ll pay
When you tell what you wish for –
In a whisper
Be prepared to pay.
Yeah. That happened on broadcast television.
Why We'd Watch Now: So we can be grateful we had no idea how bad this was.
