Metallica - 'One' (1989)
In 1989, the Grammys unveiled a new category: Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. The far-reaching nominees included aging '70s flute-powered art rock ensemble Jethro Tull, damaged punk-era icon Iggy Pop and relatively young upstarts Metallica, who were heavily favored to win. Opening with a barrage of combat sounds and crescendoing with Kirk Hammet's intense solo, the thrash legends' blistering live take on their proggy metal epic completely blew the audience away...but they still lost the award to Jethro Tull. Thanks, Grammys.
