3. "Metropolis" (Fritz Lang, 1927)
Imagination has rarely been so vibrant on celluloid. Fritz Lang's expressionistic/futuristic yarn is a masterpiece of story and production (with due credit to Eugen Schüfftan on the latter). It's socially explosive, angry, even, perhaps the perfect film for this (or any?) day.
