5. "The Gong Show"
Quiz show scandals of the '50s aside, "The Gong Show" was the first TV game phenomenon that felt unsettling. Who were these weirdos with their strange talents, and why would they open themselves up to being "gonged" on national TV? Chuck Barris's woozy emceeing led a panel of nutty judges (including the immortal Jaye P. Morgan), and the show never strayed from its trippy, decadent, dystopian vibe. Bonus: Because of her appearance on "The Gong Show," Cheryl Lynn got the chance to record the fabulous disco record "Got to be Real."
