3. Cate Blanchett, "Blue Jasmine" (2013)
Allen's latest film contains one of the best performances he's ever directed as Cate Blanchett offers up what I've already called a tour de force and one we'll be talking about for the rest of the year, no doubt. Keeping her eye on a fine line throughout, Blanchett plays a withered, shattered being without losing her grip on the character or flying off the rails when she easily could have. The tragedy of the character lurks in every nuance, every mannerism, a woman who lost herself somewhere along the way by defining her life by her relationship with a flawed man. It walks a thin line between tragedy and absurdity, as many of Allen's greatest creations do.
