James Spader’s turn as criminal mastermind turned FBI informant Red Reddington wins the year, as far as new characters are concerned. Red is one for the ages, a cackling trickster with a soft side — but it’s not a side you’re likely to see, unless you’re one of his oldest friends, or you’re on your death-bed. Soulful, mournful, filled with joy and rage in equal measure, Red ranks as one of television’s most complex and layered new characters, brought to brilliant life by Spader’s equally brilliant performance.
And Marvel fans, if you’re not watching "Blacklist" on the regular, you’re missing a weekly opportunity to see why Joss Whedon picked Spader as Ultron. Get on that.
