When this arrived at Sundance, it was already starting to build a reputation online thanks to a very crafty viral game they played, one of the first films to understand just how rabid you can make an audience by selling them a reality that starts well before they sit down in a movie theater. By the time the movie opened in theaters in August of '99, it was wildly hyped and there was some backlash from people who expected something different. No matter. There are few times I've ever been as deep-marrow-scared in a movie theater as I was during the most successful moments in this no-budget wonder, and I know I wasn't the only one screaming in the dark.
