TCA Press tour wrap-up: Winners and Losers - From 'Jersey Shore' to Conan

Why 'Boardwalk Empire' and Matt LeBlanc were winners and 'S#*! My Dad Says' and David Schwimmer were losers

Winner: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

Winner: MTV's 'Jersey Shore'

"Jersey Shore" didn't need the Television Critics Association to become a smash hit and most TCA members don't particularly need "Jersey Shore" to live a well-rounded life. But MTV, properly sensing a so-so day of cable offerings, added the "Jersey Shore" cast at the last second and got the biggest media bump of the press tour's second half. Few reporters if any were able to walk away from the frequently hilarious panel without writing about it and whether the articles, tweets or blog posts were mocking, baffling or admiring, the mere mainstream press acknowledgement of Snooki and The Situation probably somewhat benefitted both sides.

    simple is better

Is it possible to access these "galleries" without the "gallery" ... just text?

It takes too long to view this way (with the pictures loading) and I don't care about the pictures.

"Loser: The absent David Schwimmer" should be "Loser: dumbass reporter who asked actor about a former co-stars (from seven years ago) career in front of a crowd."

this feels like a 'really with seth and amy' kind of moment.

You are going to ask Matthew Perry - seven years, 1 series and a successful guess spot, removed about Friends - AGAIN! Really?

In front of the panel from the new show? Really? (i'm sure his new co-stars are already tired of 'friends' talk)

and you are going to bring up the success of the other "friends" as if there is a scale (btw, on a scale, I would put Courteney on top - Jennifer gets the media, but hasn't made a good movie in a while) Really?!?

and you didn't even look David up on IMBD to see what he is up to? (I did - Turns out that he just completed directing a movie with Clive Owen and Catherine Keener. That's pretty decent star power. ) Really?

I think Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer are actually the winners here.

Matthew - because it reminded me why I like him - he is a decent guy but doesn't mind making an ignorant, insensitive idiot look like one

    and

David - the incident led people (like me ) to look him up on IMBD. It reminded me that he directed Run, Fat Boy, Run (which I liked) and now I'll look forward to the new movie (Trust).

What's the rationale for the slide show? Reminds me of EW.com - and not in a good way.

dan Salinger - Rationale? Editorial, plus photos built around a theme. That wasn't so complicated at all!

Andrew The slide shows are awful on so many levels. We know what these people look like. Give us the text.

Salinger Thank you for replying. My question was why slide show over blog post?

I wondered if there is a business reason...readers click more and are required to stay on the site longer.

For the record, I'm in favor of editorial built around a theme all on one page... no clicks, more user friendly.

dan Salinger- The reality is that clicks rule the online world. That's why CNNSI.com does slide shows and why EW.com does slideshows and why most sites in-between do slideshows. Given those realities, all I *try* to do is, at the very least, make the text good enough to justify the click-throughs.

On a side note, as text-only, this gallery would have been a REALLY long slab of text. Commenter Andrew said "We know what these people look like," but with a very few exceptions, these are all photos from the press tour itself. They're images from an event...

    • Thanks for the honest answer about the slides, I don't mind them, I just wish they loaded a bit faster. and I just bought my computer less then a month ago,so it shouldn't be so slow. then again, I pretty much break computers by being in the same room as them, so it's probably my fault it's slow.

Dan I usually like your slides, but really? David Schwimmer listed under losers? Like Perry said just because he's not on TV doesn't mean he's not doing well in other mediums, like directing.

He was a member of the cast of Nothing But the Truth which was critically acclaimed but had released issues. He directed Run Fatboy Run as well as upcoming film starring Clive Owen, Trust.

He was also in a theatre production of Our Town and his performance as George Gibbs was very well received.

I'd say that Schwimmer has been far more successful than LeBlanc since Friends ended. And Matthew Perry did an amazing and totally classy job of beating that reporter back when all they were trying to do is bait him into insulting or saying something bad about his former 'Friend'.

Also while the title of S*** My Dad Says has generated from controversy and while the show probably is pretty terrible, any publicity like this is probably good publicity (which is why CBS is sticking by it). Also the Parents Television Council has something to say about every vulgar or crude show (South Park, Family Guy, etc). When was the last time they actually accomplished anything besides bringing new attention and viewership to a show and strengthening the resolve of people who weren't going to watch that show to begin with?

Also anything that draws more viewers for Jersey Shore is automatically a loser in my book.

dan VelocityKnown - It's not so much that Schwimmer is a "loser" in general so much that in his absence he was put in the position to be the Absent Friends Whipping Boy. Like I said in the previous slide, if LeBlanc hadn't been present and mostly well-received, Schwimmer never would have had to fill that role... He'll be fine...

Alan Schwimmer wasn't the whipping boy. Like Allison said, it was the loser.

Schwimmer got press on what he is doing now, press he would not have otherwise gotten.

velocityknown Apologies, must've missed that. I guess I'd like to nominate The People Who Look For A Friends Whipping Boy for the loser category. But I am glad to see LeBlanc making a good career move after a couple missteps with Joey and small Charlie's Angels appearances.

By the way, I am a huge fan of the slideshows, even if I don't completely agree with some of the opinions on them. Plus, unlike a lot of sites, these slideshows actually run very smoothly.

I know you did one for Emmy category nominations but do you think you'll have one for your predicted winners? Something I'd look forward to.

Cast my vote for "Don't Like"

The slide shows take too long and are not work-friendly-reading.
