Lowdown: 20th Century Fox got an early Christmas present when the Donald Sterling scandal broke on April 25. A little under a week before, director Bryan Singer was hit with the first of two sexual assault cases. In any other media environment, this would have been DEFCON 1 for a studio opening the most anticipated movie of the summer just five weeks later. Instead, the growing Sterling case became a watershed moment transcending sports and a 24/7 story in the media cycle for weeks. Luckily for Fox, Singer's story went to the back burner. The director skipped the premiere of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and stopped tweeting, but the film had the second biggest debut in the franchise's history. More importantly, it's dwarfed any global returns for the previous films with a $712.6 million cume so far.
